Profile

My doctoral capstone project at the University of Pittsburgh was to implement a unit-based committee for the implementation of evidence-based practice. I’ve performed an extensive literature review and am an expert on evidence-based practice and its implementation, mentoring and healthcare team effectiveness for making nursing practice changes. Currently, I’m working on three different HRSA-funded grant designed to teach undergraduate nursing students, advance practices nurses, and emergency department registered nurses the evidence-based practice of screening, brief intervention, referral to treatment (SBIRT) for patients who use or misuse alcohol and/or other drugs.

Clinical Emphasis

My primary interest lies in advanced adult medical/surgical nursing with an emphasis in organ transplantation, gastrointestinal diseases and most recently surgical head and neck cancer. My 28 years of clinical experience has been at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. During that time, I developed expertise in medical surgical nursing and nursing administration. In addition to my teaching experience, I practice on a head and neck cancer and plastic surgical unit. I have a special interest in professional development and mentoring for professional and nonprofessional individuals. I also am a Nurse Consultant and expert witness.

Teaching

I have been on faculty at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing since 2001. I am the primary teacher for Nursing Management of the Adult with Acute/Complex Health Problems for the undergraduate junior course. In addition to these primary responsibilities I also teach in the sophomore, junior, and senior year as a clinical instructor at UPMC-Presbyterian Hospital. I have experience in incorporating High Fidelity Human Simulated technology into the curriculum. I also lecture in the graduate programs regarding mentoring and culture awareness.

Service

I serve on the BSN Committee, School of Nursing Planning and Budgeting Committee, and numerous ad hoc committees at the School of Nursing. I am a member of Sigma Theta Tau. Currently, I am the Vice President for the Penn Trafford Drama Guild.
