Professor Emeritus
Acute & Tertiary Care
Profile
I am a Professor Emeritus as of 1/1/2021, and prior to retirement a tenured professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing, in the Acute and Tertiary Care Department. I am certified as an Adult Acute/Critical Care Clinical Nurse Specialist (CCNS).
Prior to retirement, I had an active program of NIH funded research in cardiovascular acute and critical care. , most recently examining prediction models for cardiorespiratory instability in continuously monitored hospitalized patients in order to assist nurses in identifying unstable patients earlier or, ideally, applying preemptive interventions, and as well decrease alarm fatigue. I my retirement I remain as a co-investigator on several multidisciplinary research teams which include physicians, nurses, pharmacists, biostatisticians, and computer scientists.
Service
I have more than 45 years of critical care nursing experience, including over 45 years at the advanced practice nursing level. I have collaborated in the design of curriculum guidelines and program standards for the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties. I was a member of the Board on Certification for Acute Care Nurse Practitioners of the American Nurses Credentialing Center. I have served as a volunteer to the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, and contributed to the development of that organization’s Scope of Practice and Standards of Care for Acute and Critical Care Clinical Nurse Specialists. I am also a contributor to the 2006 and 2012 revisions of the Scope of Practice and Standards of Care for Acute Care Nurse Practitioners. I am a reviewer for AACN Clinical Issues in Critical Care Nursing, Heart & Lung, American Journal of Critical Care, Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing, Journal of Clinical Monitoring and Computing, and American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. I served as a member of the Allied Health Professionals Credentials Review Committee of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center-Health System from 1999-2010. Among my honors and awards is my induction as a fellow in the American College of Critical Care Medicine, Society of Critical Care Medicine, and induction as a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing. I am also the recipient of the Society of Critical Care Medicine’s Norma J. Shoemaker Award for Excellence in Critical Care Nursing, and have served as both Chair of the Nursing Section and Chair of the Research Committee for the Society of Critical Care Medicine. In my retirement I plan to remain active in professional organizations.
