A large-scale Alzheimer’s disease study being collaborated among 70 sites across the United States, including the University of Pittsburgh, was featured on a Pittsburgh radio station, featuring Pitt Nursing professor Dr. Jennifer Lingler.
The AHEAD study targets amyloid plaque, and the buildup of the sticky, extracellular deposit in the brain is a hallmark characteristic of Alzheimer’s disease. AHEAD researchers are recruiting research volunteers who have the deposits but no clinical symptoms to take lecanemab to get ahead of the disease.
“The idea and opportunity to intervene before symptoms even manifest, before any memories are lost, is just revolutionary,” said Lingler, director of outreach, recruitment, and engagement at the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center.
