Nurse Anesthesia

The Department of Nurse Anesthesia is comprised of faculty with a broad range of expertise and experience. A primary area of expertise is in the theory and practice of anesthesia care delivery but also includes research, quality improvement, policy, medicine, genetics, jet ventilation and simulation. Currently this department houses the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Nurse Anesthesia Program which accepts BSN-prepared registered nurses with critical care experience in the art and science of anesthesia administration. This educational pathway has a strong didactic component integrated with cutting edge simulation and clinical experiences. Students manage patients of all ages for a wide range of procedures across the acuity spectrum. Clinical education experiences are provided in a variety of health care facilities in and around the local area and also some outside the area/state. Each facility provides high quality and state-of-the art care that prepares our student with a superior education.

Our MSN-DNP Program is for CRNAs who are returning to school to continue their education and earn a DNP. The curriculum is designed to help CRNAs broaden their horizons, learning about topics such as Organizational Theory, Genetics, Health Informatics, and Finance and Economics. These students also develop a scholarly project centered around a real clinical or administrative problem, possibly at their place of employment. Coursework also includes anesthesia courses related to project development, regulation and reimbursement, and curriculum instruction and evaluation.; Once these CRNAs graduate, they are well equipped to be employed in clinical leadership, administrative, educational or quality-related positions.

Additionally, faculty in the Department mentor BSN and PhD students and provide consultation to other degree tracks within the School and University. The Department of Nurse Anesthesia sponsors an undergraduate honors course and participates in faculty development and mentoring for scholars from around the United States and the World.
